How Many Wedding Invitations Should I Order For My Wedding?

One of wedding stationery’s most frequently asked questions is how many wedding invitations do you need to order? Here I breakdown how to work out how many you need, along with some top tips I tell all my wedding stationery clients.

First, get your guest list sorted

When it comes to working out how many wedding invitations you need to order the first and most important thing to do is make sure you have your guest list locked down. A rough idea isn’t quite good enough, it’s important to know exactly who you want to invite before ordering your invitations so you make sure to order the correct amount.

Count wedding invitations by household

Most invitations will be sent to families and couples, in which case only 1 invitation set needs to be sent to that household. Once you have your guest list together you will realise that you might have 100 guests but only need 50 or 60 invitations to cover the households, as most of your guests are in groups under the same address or family.

Defiantly order extras!

One thing I always recommend to my wedding stationery clients is to order a few extra. Not only for the reasons listed below but because it will save you money in the long run. Most stationers, including myself, have a minimum order number. This is because printing in small batches is really expensive, so add around 5 to 10 extra to your order just in case, the few extra pounds you spend doing this will work out much cheaper if you realise you are a few sort later on and then have to go back and order the minimum amount!

Great reasons to order a few extra wedding invites:

  • For last minute guests you might have forgotten about!

  • Incase someone RSVP’s they can’t make it so you can invite someone else instead.

  • Incase you have to resend an invite that get lost or damaged in the post.

  • For family keepsakes and for yourself of course!

  • A set to be framed to hang in your house as a great piece of art and a unique memory of the day.

  • To give some to your photographer to shoot on your wedding day as part of your wedding photos. This is great not only for your own memories as photos last forever, but also super nice for your stationer so they can see them in your wedding set up and use them for their business too!

Don’t forget some extra envelopes

Remember you’re human, and if you're going to forgo printed envelopes and plan to address all those envelopes by hand, remember mistakes and misspellings can happen. It’s worth asking your stationer to add some extra envelopes to your order incase of cock ups, with are probably inevitable, especially if you have hundreds to address, and especially if you’re anything like me and are terrible at spelling…
